Stowe Mountain Lodge Awarded Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence

Luxury Vermont Hotel Awarded Highest State Environmental Honor

Stowe Mountain Lodge, a Destination Hotels & Resorts property, was recently awarded the prestigious Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.  Stowe Mountain Lodge, the centerpiece of environmentally conscience Stowe Mountain Resort, was the only hotel to be recognized this year.  The award considers seven crucial environmental factors including benefits to the environment, health and safety benefits, use of innovative approaches, techniques and technology, level of commitment and leadership, transferability, economic efficiency and advancement of environmental education.

The Vermont Governor’s Awards were established in 1993 to recognize the actions taken by Vermonters to conserve and protect natural resources, prevent pollution, and promote environmental sustainability.  The recipients of the coveted award significantly contribute to protecting the environment, conserving energy and reducing the production of greenhouse gases.  The category of Environmental Stewardship and Resource Protection acknowledges projects with measurable and direct benefits to air, soil or water resources protecting ecosystems including those of fish, wildlife and human communities.

“The Lodge’s commitment to ‘Destination Earth’ and your staff’s willingness to go beyond the basics stands out as a model that is an inspiration to the hospitality community and all Vermonters to find effective approaches to conserve natural resources and energy, prevent pollution before it is generated, and reduce waste, thus safeguarding human health and the environment,” states Secretary of Vermont Agency of Natural Resources on behalf of Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin.

Since opening its doors in 2008, Stowe Mountain Lodge has been dedicated to practices and programs that pay respect to, and lessen the property's footprint on, the changing environment. As a key participant in Destination Hotels & Resorts’ Destination Earth program, Stowe Mountain Lodge is constantly evolving its environmental initiatives and striving to uphold the highest possible standards for environmental excellence.  Boasting a multitude of initiatives that impact every aspect of the lodge, Stowe Mountain Lodge has kept the environment at the forefront of their planning and development.  The luxury lodge has spared no expense, investing in products that save energy and recourses over time including a state-of-the-art lighting and climate control system that adjusts automatically depending on the number of people using any particular public space of the hotel, low-flow toilets and showerheads in all our guest rooms and use of micro-fiber sheets which use less water to wash and less energy to dry.  “Stowe Mountain Lodge established a strong community-wide commitment to sustainability and carbon footprint reduction, with over 80 initiatives implemented,” reads the acknowledgement for the award.

Through the lodge’s aggressive environmental efforts, led by Destination Earth champion André Blais, the luxury mountainside hotel was able to obtain several environmental awards in its short 3 year existence.  The lodge was named “Favorite New Green Retreat” by Travel + Leisure, deemed an Audubon International Sanctuary and was awarded 5 Green Keys, the highest level of achievement, by Green Key Global.  Additionally, Blais was named “Sustainability Star” by Successful Meetings, one of the most venerated meetings and events publications in the country.  Blais has implemented and led a variety of the lodge’s environmental programs including a waste composting program which has successfully diverted a high percentage of the hotel’s waste.
