Events for May 2013

  • “Where Poems Come From” with Julia Shipley

    When: 05/26/2012

“Where Poems Come From” with Julia Shipley: Saturday, May 26th 10:00a.m. -2:00p.m. $55 (financial assistance available)

For teens and adults of any level, the focus of this class is to provide a rope bridge over the abyss of “I don’t know how to write poetry ” into “Oh, would you look at that!” through creating drafts of many kinds of poems. Instead of merely hoping for inspiration to strike, we’ll play with new ways to kindle ideas using five different writing exercises. This is a generative workshop, hence giving and receiving and extensive feedback will take a back seat to the act of generation. Whether you've just published your ninth volume of poetry or never written a poem at all – join us for a fun romp through words, ideas, images, sounds and surprises. Bring curiosity, notebook, pen and a bag lunch.

Julia Shipley is a writer, teacher and caretaker of the Writer’s Retreat, a farmhouse studio rental for creative types. Her chapbook, Herdwon the Sheltering Pines Press Award and her poems have appeared in Bloodroot, flyway, Hunger Mountain, Poetry East, The Salon, terrain.org and elsewhere.

Adult Classes: Registration for classes by calling River Arts at 888-1261 during office hours, M-F, 10am-2pm or by visiting their website at http://riverartsvt.org
