The summer of 2011 offered an opportunity to bring Vermont’s legendary 10-piece “modern-day spasm band” viperHouse together for the first time in over 10 years. Known for inventive, articulate, deep-in-the-groove jazz compositions and wide-ranging improvisation, and drawing from wildly disparate inspirations, from Bird, Monk and Ellington to Sun Ra and Nino Rota, the music layers textures of horns, violin, Hammond organ, guitar, bass, drums and percussion, behind the charismatic vocals of Heloise Williams. Their powerful performance on the waterfront at Burlington’s Discover Jazz Festival, (nearly canceled by a threatening thunderstorm) was hailed as one of the fest’s great shows, sounding to the Burlington Free Press’ Brent Hallenback “like a band that had never been gone….” and Dan Bolles of Seven Days wrote “My favorite set of the fest was viperHouse.”
And now they’re coming back again, playing their only show of 2013 at SPPAC. Don’t miss this band of all-star players, bringing viperHouse to the mountaintop.
