Stowe Mountain Lodge Blog
We're used to cool and unique things to do for fun in Stowe, but nothing quite says Vermont like a rustic log furniture making class offered by Stowe Mountain Lodge recreation partner, Turner Mill Timbers.
Upon arriving at the historic Turner Mill, located right next to the tranquil Notch Brook, I immediately felt as though I had stumbled upon something one-of-a-kind. This was enhanced when I began talking to Greg Speer and his son Stewart, the owners of Turner Mill Timbers, about the art of hand crafting unique furniture that comes from Yellow Birch trees found in the Ranch Valley, on the southern slopes of Mount Mansfield.
Greg explained to me that it involves more than routers, saws and sanders but was all about the sustainable harvesting of the perfect Yellow Birch Trees within a two week window in the spring. This is the only time of the year when the onset of warm weather allows the sap within the tree to flow just enough that the bark can essentially be peeled right off. Once the bark is removed from the wood, which vary greatly in size and shape, the logs go up in Greg’s attic for the remainder of the spring and summer where they cure until they have a smooth, glossy look.
I will leave the teaching of how to turn a birch tree into anything from a coat rack to a queen size bed to Greg and Stewart but I can say that I now have a really awesome hand-made log bench in my house and a pretty cool story to go with it.
The recreation team at the Spa and Wellness Center at Stowe Mountain Lodge is really excited to be offering our guests and meeting-goers the chance to also experience the rewards in making a piece of furniture to take home at the end of their visit to the Lodge. It's just another way Stowe Mountain Lodge is creating authentic and unique experiences for our guests during their stay in Vermont.
