Over the River and Through the Woods - Snowmobiling in Stowe, Vermont

I recently took a client on a guided snowmobile tour in the Stowe, Vermont area. It was the first time I had a chance to participate in the adventure and I am really glad the opportunity presented itself. I had heard great things about this activity and was excited to finally check it out.

After a brief safety instruction and gear fitting at the headquarters, we drove five minutes to the Cotton Brook Reservoir where the trails are located.   Another safety review of how to operate the machines and we were off.

After a brief pass through open meadows, the trail quickly came to a narrow pass through the woods and snaked along a ridgeline for about 30 minutes.  The snowpack kept getting deeper and deeper and the solitude of the woods was evident.  At the top of a mountain we stopped to check in with each other and share the experience. We had seven people in our group of all experience levels.  As with any group activity we heard from all sides - some loved the slower speed and others were ready for a more adventurous pace.  All agreed that it takes a lot more physical work than expected to maneuver these machines through the winding mountain trails.  A few were shocked at how quickly we went from open meadows to narrow trails and had wished they had more time to get comfortable with driving.

I am glad I finally went on this trip so that I can better represent it to our groups – the owner is able to customize tours depending on ability levels so that our group guests all have an enjoyable time.

When planning activities, I suggest that you ask your sales contact if he/she has actually done the activities they are recommending. Of course, it is nearly impossible for us to do everything, but like most things, I came out of the experience with a different understanding than I did going into it.

Most importantly, my client really loved the fact that we had a relationship with the owner and operator of this tour company. Being an advocate for both sides is important to setting the stage for any successful group activity.
