Recipe for Maple Sugar on Snow in Stowe

March in Vermont means more than just basketball and the anticipation of spring skiing.  As a born and raised Vermonter, one of my favorite late winter delicacies was (and, let’s face it, always will be) sugar on snow.

This tasty treat is a Vermont tradition found in many sugar houses once the sap starts running from the maple trees.

If you can’t come to Vermont to experience the sweet smell of a sugar house, you can try it at home.

Sugar on Snow recipe:

  1. Find clean snow.  (This may be the hardest part.)
  2. Boil maple syrup until it’s taffy-like and a bit stretchy when you pull the spoon out of the pot.
  3. Pour over the snow where it will harden.
  4. Feast.

To round out the treat, don’t forget to serve it with donuts and dill pickles (sounds odd, tastes great) to help offset the overwhelming sweet. But, of course, we would love to see you in Vermont at Stowe Mountain Lodge and point you in the direction of a sugar house that serves it to you fresh from the source.  See you this Maple Season!
