Experiencing a glider ride over the Green Mountains with Stowe Soaring is an adventure that shouldn't be missed when visiting Stowe, Vermont.
My first trip started out with Don, master glider pilot, explaining to me how he feels as though he should have been born a bird. That makes sense, I thought, for someone who spends their days flying a non-motorized air craft.
Although Don, manager of Stowe Mountain Lodge recreation partner Stowe Soaring, showed me the basics of how a glider works, I was not prepared for the thrilling ride of a lifetime that was to follow.
The ride began as we were pulled up into the air by a prop plane. Shortly after take- off, the “lead plane” releases the glider to its own devices and there we were, floating in the air with nothing but the sound of air rushing by the glider at 80 miles an hour and the most spectacular view of Mount Mansfield that anyone could imagine out the window.
While I was attempting to enjoy the view and forget about the fact that I was in what amounts to a slightly bigger, metal version of a paper airplane at 6,000 feet above the ground, Don turned around and asked me if I like roller coasters.
I responded with a simultaneous shake of the head and a hesitant “yes”. The nose dive that followed will not soon be forgotten. Bottom line, sometimes it pays to go outside of your comfort zone a bit and anything you do that is followed by the thought, “well that was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done” is well worth your time.
If you too like thrill-seeking adventures, be sure to visit the recreation desk in the Spa and Wellness Center at Stowe Mountain Lodge to sign up for the ride of a lifetime. I mean that sincerely! Stowe Soaring offers rides from May until November and Stowe Mountain Lodge can provide transporation to the gliding spot at the Morrisville airport.
