Environmental Stewardship

What is the key to excellence in environmental stewardship? There are dozens of factors but there are three core actions that make it all happen.

1.  Listening - We need to listen to our guests, our team, and our community to completely understand the agenda at hand. Having open ears is a great start to a successful endeavor. Having open lines of communication with our team has been extremely effective in identifying and improving environmental initiatives.

2.  Relationships - Forming relationships with like-minded individuals and organizations gives the effort at hand some help in getting achieved.  For example, who better for Stowe Mountain Lodge to consult on the topic of organic lawn care than our very own Kevin Komer, superintendent of Stowe Mountain Golf Club. Utilizing Kevin’s knowledge of environmentally responsible turf care has been instrumental to the success of SML’s lawn.

3.  Service Above Self – “There is no I in Team”    By understanding the collective goal and removing the individual from the equation, the sky is the limit. Marching to “One Band and One Sound” evokes the power of the masses, which in turn is much more effective in accomplishing goals.

With all that said, Stowe Mountain Lodge has been accepted into the Green Key Eco –Rating Program. Green Key evaluates hotels based on Corporate Environmental Management, Housekeeping, Conference Services, F&B and Engineering.  Hotel operations and involvement of the management, employees and guests of the hotel are taken into consideration as well.

We are proud to hold a 5 key rating, with a goal of still looking at ways we can improve and maintain this elite award.  One of the best things about these programs is the education received on how to improve our existing programs and practices, which pay respect to, and lessen our footprint on our changing environment.

Andre Blais is the champion of the Stowe Mountain Lodge Destination Earth program, a leader in the Destination Hotels & Resorts portfolio.
