Dog Days of Summer - Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Vermont!photo

Vermont is known to be a dog-friendly state, and Stowe is at the epicenter of dog-friendly happenings. The fact that Stowe Mountain Lodge is a dog-friendly hotel only goes along with the lifestyle that most visitors fall in love with when visiting our little New England town.

There’s an abundance of activities to do while in Stowe with your dog, including dining out on the patio on a beautiful day or lounging in the upper lobby while reading a book by the fire on a lazy one. Hiking, swimming, biking, even shopping are all doable with your dog in Vermont. Yes, many shops in the area are also dog-friendly.

But one that we think is fun, yet also unique, which dogs seem to love once they get the hang of it, is Stand Up Paddle Boarding. It seems like it would be a challenge and anything but relaxing to do with your dog on a hot summer day, but once the dog see how easy it is for them to lounge on the front of your board while you do all the work, they are sold.

Here are some suggestions for trying Stand Up Paddle Boarding with your Four-Legged Friends!

-Every dog is different, so it’s important to work at your dog’s pace and make every early paddling experience fun and rewarding, so they look forward to doing it!

-Give your pups time to get used to the board by acclimatizing them with treats, praises and rewards when first getting on the board, and introduce the board to them on land before putting it in the water.

-When you first do place the board in the water, make sure it is done gradually. Don’t allow the board to tip or roll AT ALL when your dog first jumps on and off, so they know that the board is stable for them.

-Make sure that you provide padding on the board that gives your pups some secure footing on what could be a slippery and wet board. Rubberized bathmats work great because they are inexpensive, moveable and provide a great grip.

-Keep the first outing short, like less than an hour, so they look forward to the next outing and aren’t too tired from the first one!

-Have fun! Nothing beats summer like water adventures with the pups!
